I just left a comment on the Advert Fan site about the latest offering of Crispin, Porter & Bogusky. You go there to watch the thing, I don't like it...so it is not going to be posted here.
My comment is below, but first in the interest of full disclosure. I don't like any of the work for Burger King. I am not their market, so I figured that was fine. They were doing great work for THEIR market. I am however a Mom with a young son that would probably love for me to take him to Burger King (I won't) and has loved Sponge Bob for years. I am also the mother of a daughter that is in her teens and thankfully never watches television and therefore has been able to avoid all the pitfalls of negative body imaginary that it offers up in huge doses every second of the day. The trouble lies with that fact that they have recently decided to defend this commercial by saying it is not geared towards kids, but towards the parents of kids. Okay, well now I am their market and I still hate the spot.
Also, I love the original song, always have...I just don't love it in this context.
My comment on the Advert Fan site:
Not funny. Stupid.
Let’s for a second think about the 5 to 10 year old crowd that is
the target market for Sponge Bob. Then let’s consider them seeing the
Burger King measuring a woman’s squared backside, add in to that the
fact that they are dressed like tarty school girls. Was the goal of
this spot to turn the Tots who love Sponge Bob on???
Are we trying to make them want Burger King kids meals because of Sponge Bob or or Sponge Butts and Boobs???
They could have been clever and instead, they decided to be crass.
The Burger King is played. The Brand is only appealing to young men
that love movies such as Jackass and with that they shouldn’t even
bother with a kids meal. I would blame Nickelodeon, too. However, they
recently had the Pussy Cat Dolls perform for the Kids Choice Awards.
So, clearly they do not care about the fragile esteems of their young
female audience.
